Chuan is a low-impact, slow motion exercise with many health benefits. Tai Chi Chuan means supreme ultimate fist (or boxing), and started as a martial art. Today it is practiced mainly for its health benefits. It uses breathing, visualization, and movement to work the entire body. Tai Chi has also been described as meditation in motion. It can be practiced by people of all fitness levels, from those in wheelchairs to those who are the most physically fit. The movements in Tai Chi are gentle and flowing, like water flowing through a brook. Tai Chi improves muscle strength, flexibility, and balance, while also having some aerobic benefit. It has many health benefits, and it is also an excellent way to relieve stress. For more information about the health benefits of Tai Chi, see The Mayo Clinic article, “Tai Chi: A gentle way to fight stress.”
Together, Tai Chi and Qigong will help you center your body, mind, and spirit, while helping you to develop flexibility, balance, and strength.
This is a beginner level class that will teach Qigong and Tai Chi. It will be adapted for each student’s physical abilities.
Although Tai Chi and Qigong are generally considered to be very safe, if you have specific medical conditions, it is recommended that you speak with your doctor to get approval for your participation in this class
